Independent Healthcare Systems Working Together
A Case Study in Interventional Cardiology
TPC Members embarked on a journey to explore savings opportunities within Interventional Cardiology. What we discovered translated to $5 million savings, an improbable 25% of spend. While many healthcare systems struggle to affect real change within their own walls, we committed to doing it together across eight healthcare systems. And that’s part of what makes TPC unique...commitment. Yes, understanding the healthcare environment and their peers was important. But it’s not enough. The will to act; the will to commit to objectively evaluate the merits and risks of opportunity, and the invitation to get involved from the beginning…that’s a special combination. So how did we bring all that together?
We knew there was power in numbers. Not in leveraging it to force change, but in committing to work together in pursuit of a common goal. Equally important in capturing such opportunity was the commitment of our Physician leaders. They understood the challenges we all face in a changing healthcare marketplace. AND they understood how to work with their peers to affect real change.
How did our Physicians lead us in this endeavor? Yes, understanding the healthcare environment and their peers was important. But it’s not enough. The will to act; the will to commit to objectively evaluate the merits and risks of opportunity, and the invitation to get involved from the beginning...that’s a special combination. So how did we bring all that together?
Physicians have historically been highly collaborative within their own community. They share challenges, successes, and the pursuit of helping their patients live well. At TPC, we adopted their collaborative community and supplemented it with meaningful process to help drive outcomes. It’s a delicate balance, but we’re all in it together. Our physicians weren’t just advisors, they were co-owners of both the process and the outcomes.
This approach has created a culture that delivers results. With Interventional Cardiology, TPC Members worked together in developing and executing on a committed strategy, Physician leaders were prepared for the critical peer-to-peer change management, and we achieved 86% compliance to a single supplier resulting in a savings of $5 million.
